A tool for assessing the perceived quality of life and the mental and social functional ability of people with memory disease (MIKE) Target group MIKE is aimed at assessing people who have minor to moderate memory disease and who remain living in their own homes. Suitable for both aged and working-age persons with memory disease. How does the concept work in practice? MIKE is a simple, widely applicable and reliable assessment tool. It consists of three sections: 1. Manual 2. Interview form 3. Behaviour observation form The assessment process can be phased according to the needs of the person being assessed. MIKE has not been developed for the use of any specific profession. However, its use requires knowledge and experience of changes caused my memory diseases in a person’s functional abilities and a thorough familiarisation with the manual. MIKE is not based on a total score, and the reassessments are scored for each section separately. It can be used for assessing the efficacy and impact of rehabilitation, group activities or home-care services. How does the concept help people with memory disease or prevent memory disease? MIKE can be used in the activities run by Alzheimer Associations, in home care, in serviced housing and day centres. MIKE does not provide a full picture of the overall functional abilities of a person with memory disease. Therefore it should be used only as part of a more comprehensive assessment. However, when assessing the impact of, for example, group activities on a person’s situation, the tool will serve as an adequate tool on its own.
